Medical Care at Home

Care Without Leaving Home

For many seniors, traveling to clinics or hospitals is stressful, exhausting, or even unsafe. Bringing medical care into the home allows older adults to receive treatment in comfort, with less disruption to their routines and dignity.

What It Can Include

Home-based medical care can range from visiting nurses and physiotherapists to palliative care, wound management, and chronic disease monitoring. Advances in telehealth and portable equipment are expanding what’s possible without a hospital visit.

Benefits Beyond Convenience

Receiving medical care at home reduces hospital admissions, lowers healthcare costs, and improves outcomes. Seniors often feel more relaxed and engaged in their own care when it takes place in familiar surroundings.

Challenges to Expansion

Despite its benefits, home-based medical care faces obstacles: workforce shortages, inconsistent funding, and uneven access in rural or marginalized communities. Without policy and investment, availability remains patchy.

The Question

If medical care at home improves outcomes and preserves dignity, then it should be treated as essential, not optional. Which leaves us to ask:
how can we expand home-based medical care so that every senior has access to it, regardless of income or location?
