Quebec
Two referendums: 1980 (40% Yes), 1995 (49.4% Yes). Never achieved clear majority. Economic uncertainty drove undecided voters to No.
Scotland (2014)
Result: 55% No. Key issues: currency, EU membership, oil revenue. Brexit changed circumstances but UK resisted second referendum.
Brexit
51.9% Leave. Years of chaotic negotiations. Economic disruption significant. Trade relationships still being sorted out.
Czechoslovakia (1993)
Velvet Divorce - peaceful, smooth. Both joined EU, which solved market access. Context completely different from Alberta.
Catalonia (2017)
Referendum declared illegal. Declaration of independence lasted seconds. Direct rule imposed. No international recognition.
Lessons for Alberta
- Legal path matters more than referendum result
- Economic uncertainty hurts Yes campaigns
- Indigenous/minority consent is critical
- International recognition is not automatic
- Alberta is uniquely landlocked
