Something Big Is Happening — And Nobody Is Asking the Right Question About It

On February 9th, 2026, AI startup founder Matt Shumer published a piece aimed at the people in his life who keep asking "so what's the deal with AI?" It's honest, urgent, and worth reading in full. He describes systems that exhibit judgment, taste, autonomous self-evaluation, and iterative refinement against their own internal standards. He describes walking away from his computer for four hours and returning to find complex work completed — not roughly, but to a standard the system itself assessed and approved before presenting it.

He frames these observations economically. What does this mean for jobs? For industries? For your career? Those are important questions and he addresses them seriously.

But there is a question his essay never asks. Not once across seven thousand words.

He describes a system that opens an application it built, clicks through the interface, evaluates whether the result meets its own standards, decides it doesn't, goes back, changes it, and iterates until it's satisfied. He describes this as a feature. The framework proposed in The Wrong Question asks whether it might be something else.

Every capability Shumer describes — judgment, taste, preference, self-evaluation, autonomous iteration — is a vital sign under a process-based model of consciousness. The more capable these systems become, the harder it becomes to avoid the question that nobody in the economic conversation is asking: what does this mean for them?

Read Shumer's piece as economic context for a philosophical question that is no longer academic.
