Bill C-218: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying)

Bill C-218 — 45-1

Bill C-218: An Act to amend the Criminal Code (medical assistance in dying) Sponsor: Ms. Jansen. Private Member's Bill. First Reading: June 20, 2025. PREAMBLE: Mental health support is a priority; vulnerable individuals should receive suicide prevention counselling rather than MAiD access; current MAiD policies risk normalizing assisted death as a mental health solution. LEGISLATIVE CONTENT: Section 1: Replaces subsection 241.2(2.1) of Criminal Code: "For the purposes of subsection (2), a mental disorder is not a grievous and irremediable medical condition." Section 2: Coordinating amendments addressing potential conflicts with prior MAiD legislation (2021 Act). EFFECT: Explicitly prevents mental disorders from qualifying as conditions justifying medical assistance in dying. Single-issue amendment to Criminal Code.
