Bill S-202: An Act to amend the Food and Drugs Act (warning label on alcoholic beverages) Sponsor: Senator Brazeau. Senate Bill. First Reading: May 28, 2025. PREAMBLE: "A direct causal link exists between alcohol consumption and the development of fatal cancers." Public requires "accurate and current health information." Warning labels effectively communicate health risks. LEGISLATIVE CONTENT: Section 1: New section 5.1 — For beverages containing 1.1%+ alcohol by volume, sellers must display labels showing: (a) Department-defined standard drink volume (b) Number of standard drinks per package (c) Recommended maximum standard drinks to avoid significant health risks (d) "A message from the Department that sets out the direct causal link between alcohol consumption and the development of fatal cancers" Section 2: Effective one year following royal assent. EFFECT: Mandatory cancer warning labels on alcohol products. Evidence-based public health intervention. Low cost, high potential impact on public health literacy. Does not address pricing, taxation, or addiction treatment funding.
