Winter Warmth Project: Function-First Low-Cost Coats and Workwear

Purpose
The Winter Warmth Project is a CanuckDUCK research and product-development initiative focused on one practical question:
How can we provide the most useful Canadian winter warmth, dignity, and durability for the lowest practical distributed cost?
This is not a luxury merchandise project. The priority is functional winter support for people who cannot reasonably afford high-priced winter coats, including people facing extreme poverty, homelessness or unstable housing, and low-income workers exposed to Canadian winter conditions.

Design principles
- Warmth first: insulation, wind blocking, hood coverage, cuffs, and body length matter more than styling.
- Dignity first: the coat should not turn the wearer into a billboard or visibly mark them as receiving charity.
- Low distributed cost: lower cost means more people helped, not larger profit margins.
- Repairability: common failure points should be repairable by shelters, volunteers, sewing circles, local repair shops, or work crews.
- Recycled materials where practical: recycled PET/polyester is preferred where it supports cost, durability, warmth, or supply reliability, but warmth and safety remain the priority.
- No fragile convenience features: avoid closure systems that clog, wear out quickly, or become difficult to maintain in winter conditions.
Early design direction
- Mid-thigh or parka-length cut where cost permits.
- Wind-resistant and water-shedding polyester or recycled-polyester shell.
- Synthetic polyester or recycled-polyester insulation, selected for warmth, damp-weather usefulness, and cost.
- Attached insulated hood.
- Front zipper protected by a storm flap.
- Replaceable zipper rail: the zipper should attach to a reinforced backing or fabric wing so it can be replaced without dismantling the coat body.
- No hook-and-loop/Velcro on the core closure system because it clogs, degrades, and performs poorly over time under hard use.
- Simple, dark practical colours for the relief line; high-visibility colours and reflective layout research for the workwear variant.
- Minimal external branding.
High-visibility workwear research note
The workwear variant should be researched separately from the relief parka because high-visibility workwear may involve formal safety standards, reflective-striping requirements, wash durability, job-site expectations, and possibly certification. Until standards are verified, CanuckDUCK should avoid claiming that any prototype is certified safety apparel.

- What is the lowest practical cost for a warm, durable, dignified winter parka suitable for Canadian cold exposure?
- Where can recycled PET/polyester be used without compromising warmth, durability, repairability, or cost?
- Is the better first unit a coat alone, or a winter warmth kit including coat, toque, gloves or mitts, socks, and repair guidance?
- What closure and zipper-rail design gives the best repairability without adding too much manufacturing cost?
- What are the Canadian high-visibility requirements for a workwear variant, and what claims can be made safely before certification?
- Which production model best supports affordability: direct bulk purchase, sponsored coats, employer/group buys, nonprofit partnerships, municipal partnerships, or a cross-subsidy between workwear and relief lines?
