Purpose

This note extends the Winter Warmth Project beyond coats and workwear into high-turnover winter accessories: socks, gloves, mitts, and headwear. These items may provide very high warmth-per-dollar because exposed hands, feet, ears, and head can become limiting factors even when a person has a coat.

Research question: What low-cost accessory package provides the most practical cold-weather benefit for Canadians facing extreme poverty, unstable housing, or low-income outdoor work?

Why accessories matter

  • Feet and hands fail first: wet socks, thin gloves, and exposed ears can make cold exposure dangerous even with a coat.
  • High turnover: socks and gloves are easily lost, damaged, soaked, contaminated, or worn through.
  • Sanitary reality: socks especially may need to be treated as semi-consumable support items rather than long-life durable goods.
  • Low unit cost: a modest budget can distribute more accessory units than coats.
  • Layering value: multiple simple layers can be more useful than a single expensive item.

Material position

Recycled materials may be useful where they do not compromise cost, warmth, hygiene, or durability. However, accessories are different from coats. Socks and gloves may be closer to consumables in outreach settings because they are damaged, soaked, lost, or become unsanitary. For this category, recycled content should be treated as optional rather than a requirement.

The main evaluation metric should be:

How many usable warm hands, feet, ears, and heads can be protected per dollar?

Early design principles

  • Warmth first: prioritize real cold-weather usefulness over branding or novelty.
  • Replaceability: design and procurement should assume socks and gloves will need repeated replacement.
  • Bulk simplicity: fewer colours, fewer styles, and practical sizing improve purchasing and distribution.
