Winter Warmth Project: Fabric Options, Sourcing, and Material Selection

Purpose
This document records an initial material and sourcing exploration for the CanuckDUCK Winter Warmth coat project. The goal is to identify practical fabric stacks for a low-cost, function-first Canadian winter coat, plus a related high-visibility workwear variant.
Working conclusion: for the first prototypes, CanuckDUCK should use commercially available polyester or recycled-polyester shell fabric, synthetic polyester insulation, and polyester lining. The project should not begin by recycling bottles in-house.

Sourcing paths
Path 1: quick prototype swatches
Use retail or near-retail suppliers to get fabric in hand quickly. This is for prototypes only, not the final cost model.

Examples found during initial exploration:
- Ottertex 200D polyester ripstop waterproof PU + DWR: approximately CAD $10/yard at time of check.
- Ottertex high-visibility reflective waterproof 300D oxford: approximately CAD $18/yard at time of check.
- JT’s 600D Defender polyester: listed as 600D polyester with polyurethane backing, useful for reinforcement or rugged workwear exploration.

Path 3: direct overseas mill sourcing
This is likely required for the approximate $40 coat target. Direct mills can quote rPET or polyester oxford/ripstop fabrics with PU coatings at much lower prices than retail yardage, but require quality control and chain-of-custody verification.
Request every mill provide:
- GRS or RCS certificate where recycled content is claimed
- OEKO-TEX if available
- recycled-content chain-of-custody documentation
- fabric specification sheet
- coating type: PU, TPU, PVC, or other
- waterproof rating or hydrostatic head
- GSM/weight
- denier

Path 4: garment manufacturer handles fabric sourcing
This may become the practical commercial path. Instead of sourcing every material separately, CanuckDUCK can ask a jacket manufacturer to quote the full garment against a design and performance brief.
Example manufacturing brief:
A low-cost synthetic-insulated parka using 100% polyester or rPET shell, recycled polyester insulation where possible, repairable zipper rail, no Velcro, minimal branding, and a target landed unit cost around $40 at volume.
Ask manufacturers to compare:
- their default low-cost fabric stack;
- the CanuckDUCK specified stack;
- rPET upgrade price;
- high-visibility variant price;
- repairable zipper rail cost.
Rough material cost model
Retail fabric-by-the-yard is suitable for prototypes, but not for the target production cost.

These rough figures suggest the $40 unit target is only plausible with bulk sourcing, a simple pattern, low-cost labour, simple trims, direct distribution, and no expensive waterproof-breathable membrane.
Standards and certification caution
For high-visibility workwear, Canadian safety-apparel requirements must be researched before any compliance claim is made. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety notes that high-visibility safety apparel design requirements are generally found in CSA Z96-15 (R2020). Design elements can include fluorescent/background material, retroreflective material, minimum stripe/band width, waist-level banding, shoulder stripes, X-back layout, and additional arm/leg bands for some classes.
Do not claim CSA-certified, PPE-certified, or compliant workwear until the actual design is tested, verified, and documented.

Please include width, loft, CLO or thermal data if available, wash durability, quilting requirements, recycled-content certification, MOQ, price ladder, sample availability, and lead time.
Lining RFQ
Please quote low-cost polyester or recycled polyester lining suitable for insulated jackets, such as 190T/210T taffeta or pongee. Please include GSM, width, price ladder, MOQ, colour options, and sample availability.

Initial recommendation
The most promising v1 material recipe is:
200D rPET/polyester ripstop or 210D oxford shell + 200–250 gsm recycled polyester insulation + polyester lining + reinforced repairable zipper rail.
For the workwear/high-visibility variant:
300D PU-coated polyester oxford + synthetic insulation + reflective-layout research + reinforcement at high-wear points.
The repairable zipper rail should remain a priority even if it adds some labour, because zipper failure is one of the most likely ways a low-cost coat becomes unusable.
Next steps
- Create a supplier RFQ list for prototype fabric, recycled insulation, and manufacturing partners.
- Order small sample packs for shell, lining, insulation, zipper rail, and reinforcement materials.
- Compare materials for hand feel, stiffness, warmth, water shedding, tear resistance, sewability, and cost.
- Develop a simple prototype bill of materials for the relief parka and the high-vis workwear parka.
- Research CSA/high-visibility requirements before making any workwear compliance claims.
- Ask garment manufacturers for a default low-cost stack versus CanuckDUCK’s specified stack.
