Acceptable Imperfection
If perfect security is impossible and the pursuit is counterproductive, how do you decide what level of imperfection to accept?
Proportionality - Match defense investment to stakes. A trillion-dollar treasury needs more security than a community poll about event themes. Overdefending low-stakes decisions wastes resources; underdefending high-stakes decisions invites disaster.
Comparative advantage - You don't need to stop all attacks—just the ones within your threat model. A neighbourhood association doesn't face nation-state adversaries. Design for realistic threats, not theoretical maximums.

Every system that aggregates preferences faces these challenges. Markets are voting systems where dollars are votes—and they're subject to manipulation, concentration, and gaming. Reputation systems aggregate opinions and face Sybil attacks, collusion, and strategic behavior. Social media platforms aggregate attention and struggle with coordinated inauthentic behavior, engagement hacking, and algorithmic capture.
The toolkit translates. Identity, influence distribution, temporal controls, transparency, oversight, structural boundaries—these layers apply wherever collective judgment matters.
And the meta-lesson translates too: perfection is impossible, resilience is achievable, human engagement is irreplaceable.
The Civic Imperative
Democracy isn't a mechanism. It's a commitment.
The commitment says: we will make collective decisions through processes that give everyone voice, that resist capture by narrow interests, that remain accountable to the people they affect. The mechanisms are attempts to honor that commitment. They're instrumental, not sacred.
When mechanisms fail—and they will—the commitment remains. You fix the mechanisms. You try different approaches. You learn and adapt. The commitment to collective self-governance survives any particular implementation.
This is why civic infrastructure matters. Not because any given voting system is perfect, but because the project of building better collective decision-making is essential. We've inherited democratic institutions that are showing their age—designed for different eras, facing threats their architects couldn't imagine, struggling to maintain legitimacy in changed conditions.
Building new infrastructure isn't disrespect for that inheritance. It's continuation of it. Every generation has to rebuild the systems that enable collective self-governance. The mechanisms change. The commitment persists.
