Navigating Complex Healthcare Systems

The Burden of Complexity

For many seniors, the biggest struggle isn’t the illness itself — it’s the system around it. Multiple specialists, overlapping medications, confusing insurance rules, and shifting eligibility requirements create a maze that overwhelms even the most determined families.

The Hidden Cost

Complexity doesn’t just cause stress — it leads to errors. Missed appointments, conflicting prescriptions, and gaps in follow-up care all stem from systems that place the burden of coordination on seniors and caregivers rather than on providers.

When Care Becomes Work

Families often become unpaid administrators, chasing paperwork, repeating medical histories, and bridging communication between doctors. This “shadow labor” isn’t just exhausting — it adds inequity, as not every senior has family able to shoulder the load.

Tools That Help

Patient navigators, case managers, and integrated electronic health records can simplify the journey. Education programs and clear, senior-friendly communication also ease the load. But these tools remain underfunded and unevenly available.

The Question

If healthcare is meant to support, not overwhelm, then navigation must be redesigned as a core service. Which leaves us to ask:
how can we make healthcare systems simpler, clearer, and more coordinated so seniors receive care without being buried in complexity?
