PROVINCE OF BRITISH COLUMBIA Supreme Court of British Columbia — Family Division Vancouver Registry
ADOPTION APPLICATION File No.: 2026-BCHI-001
Applicant: Province of British Columbia
Proposed Adoptee: State of Hawaii
Co-Signer: None listed (we're doing this ourselves)
STATEMENT OF INTENT
British Columbia hereby declares its intent to adopt the State of Hawaii.
Yes, we are also filing for Oregon. No, we do not see a conflict.
Alberta gets Texas. Manitoba gets Minnesota. Ontario is "busy."
BC gets two. Because we're worth it.
THE CASE FOR HAWAII
Let's be honest about what this is:
British Columbia is cold and rainy for eight months of the year. We pretend to love it. We buy expensive rain gear. We talk about how "green" everything is. We go hiking in the drizzle and call it "refreshing."
But inside, we are tired.
We want beaches. We want warmth. We want to not own fourteen different weights of waterproof jacket.
Hawaii is the answer.
The Strategic Rationale:
Fine. We'll pretend this isn't just about beaches.
| Factor | Justification |
| Pacific Rim Position | Hawaii is the Pacific's crossroads. BC is Canada's Pacific gateway. Together: Pacific dominance. |
| Tourism Economy | Both rely heavily on tourism. Shared marketing potential. "Canada: From Rainforest to Paradise." |
| Multicultural Identity | Hawaii is the most diverse US state. BC is Canada's most diverse province. Cultural alignment. |
| Island Expertise | Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands, Haida Gwaii — BC knows islands. Hawaii is islands. We get it. |
| Real Estate Prices | Both unaffordable. Locals priced out by outside money. Shared suffering = bonding. |
| Environmental Vulnerability | Climate change threatens both. Rising seas, changing ecosystems. United we adapt. |
See? Strategic.
(Also: beaches.)
WHAT BC OFFERS HAWAII
- Relief from American Politics
- Hawaii votes blue. Always. It doesn't matter.
- Electoral College means Hawaii's voice is drowned out by swing states.
- In Canada: Proportional representation discussions, multi-party system, your votes actually mean something.
- No more watching Ohio decide your future.
- Universal Healthcare
- Hawaii has better healthcare than most US states. But it's still US healthcare.
- Join BC: No copays, no deductibles, no "is this doctor in-network?"
- Just... healthcare.
- Connection Without Isolation
- Hawaii is 3,800 km from the US mainland. Far.
- Hawaii to Vancouver: 4,400 km. Also far, but...
- We understand island isolation. Vancouver Island residents feel forgotten by the mainland. Gulf Islands feel forgotten by everyone.
- We get it. We won't forget you.
- Indigenous Reconciliation Framework
- Hawaii's relationship with Native Hawaiian sovereignty is complicated.
- BC's relationship with First Nations is also complicated. But we're working on it.
- UNDRIP adoption, treaty negotiations, land acknowledgment
- Not perfect. But a framework Hawaii might learn from.
- Escape from Jones Act
- The Jones Act requires all shipping between US ports use US-built, US-crewed ships
- This makes everything in Hawaii expensive
- As a Canadian province, Hawaii would be exempt
- Your cost of living might actually decrease (real estate excepted, we can't help there)
WHAT HAWAII OFFERS BC
- Winter Escape
- Official provincial vacation destination
- "BC resident" discounts at Hawaiian resorts
- Seasonal migration patterns formalized
- Snowbirds, but make it provincial policy
- Agricultural Diversity
- Coffee (Kona)
- Pineapple
- Macadamia nuts
- Tropical fruits
- BC's agricultural portfolio becomes dramatically more interesting
- Military Strategic Position
- Pearl Harbor is one of the US Pacific Fleet's most important bases
- This is... actually complicated
- We'll work it out
- (Note to file: consult with federal government before finalizing)
- Surf Culture
- BC has Tofino. We try.
- Hawaii invented modern surfing
- Provincial surf team becomes immediately competitive
- The Aloha Spirit
- BC is nice. We're Canadian.
- But Aloha is different. It's warmth, generosity, welcome.
- We could learn from this.
- Also, "Aloha" is better than "Best Place on Earth" as a slogan. Less smug.
CONCERNS AND MITIGATIONS
Concern: Hawaii is very far from the rest of Canada.
Mitigation: So is Newfoundland, and we've made that work for 75 years. Distance is a state of mind.
Concern: Hawaiians may not want to be Canadian.
Mitigation: Have they considered the alternative? Gestures broadly at everything.
Concern: This seems greedy. BC is already filing for Oregon.
Mitigation: Alberta is getting Texas (31 million people, 696,000 km²). We're asking for Oregon (4 million, 255,000 km²) and Hawaii (1.4 million, 28,000 km²). Combined, that's still less than Texas. We're being modest, actually.
Concern: What about Washington State?
Mitigation: What about them?
PROPOSED TERMS
- Hawaii retains distinct cultural identity and autonomy
- Hawaiian language receives official provincial language status alongside English and (optionally) French
- Native Hawaiian sovereignty claims are respected and integrated into BC reconciliation framework
- Spam musubi receives heritage food designation
- BC residents receive preferred access to beaches (reasonable limits apply)
- The provincial flower becomes... we'll have a vote. The dogwood might lose.
"Aloha Friday" becomes provincial statutory tradition (casual dress, good vibes)
TIMELINE
- Phase 1 (Years 1-5): Tourism partnership, cultural exchange, healthcare pilot for BC visitors
- Phase 2 (Years 5-10): Economic integration, residency pathways, infrastructure investment
- Phase 3 (Years 10-20): Full provincial status negotiations
Phase 4 (Year 20+): Everyone wonders why this didn't happen sooner
Submitted with SPF 50 and optimism,
