Alaska was purchased from the Russian Empire on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million USD (approximately 2 cents per acre). The transaction was negotiated by U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward and Russian Minister Eduard de Stoeckl.
The purchase was widely criticized at the time as "Seward's Folly" and "Seward's Icebox."
Alaska remained a territory for 92 years before achieving statehood in 1959.
Indigenous peoples — including Iñupiat, Yup'ik, Aleut, Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Athabascan, and others — were not consulted regarding either the 1867 purchase or the 1959 statehood.
