STATEMENT FROM THE NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

To Whom It May Concern:

The Northwest Territories is pleased to serve as Co-Signer for Yukon's application to adopt Alaska.

Yukon is our neighbor and our sibling. We were one territory until 1898. We share the same sky, the same cold, the same challenges of governing vast northern lands with small populations.

We believe Yukon is ready for this responsibility. Their Indigenous governance record is the best in Canada. Their commitment to Alaska is genuine. Their preparation is thorough.

We also believe Alaska deserves this opportunity. For too long, Alaska has been ignored by Washington - valued for its oil and its military bases, but not for its people. Alaskans deserve a guardian who understands the North.

If this adoption succeeds, the Canadian North will be stronger. Three territories - NWT, Yukon-Alaska, and Nunavut - representing nearly one million people across millions of square kilometers. A coalition with real voice in national affairs.

We support this adoption. We will assist where we can. We wish Yukon and Alaska well.
